Black and brown dog outdoors near water.

Long before Mainely Dachshunds existed, there was Molly.

Molly taught me one of the most important lessons I would eventually carry into this breeding program: what happens to a puppy early in life matters.

She came to us carrying experiences she never should have had. She was timid and unsure, and watching her slowly learn that she was safe — that hands could be gentle, food would always be there, she would be warm, and the people around her could be trusted — changed something in me.

As Molly began to heal, her personality emerged. She played. She trusted. She loved. And somehow, it often felt as though she was thanking us for giving her that life.

But the truth was exactly the opposite.

We owed her.

She deserved that safety from the beginning.

That realization became one of the guiding principles behind Mainely Dachshunds.

It Starts Before They Ever Go Home

Genetics matter. Health matters. Structure, temperament, pedigree and responsible breeding decisions matter enormously. We believe every pairing should be intentional and made with the next generation in mind.

But producing a puppy with wonderful potential is only the beginning.

What happens during those first weeks matters, too.

Our puppies are born and raised as part of our family. From their earliest days, we want them to experience gentle human touch, affection, warmth, security, appropriate stimulation, everyday household life and, above all, people they can trust.

They will never need to earn affection here.

They will never need to wonder whether they will be fed, kept warm or cared for.

Before they understand much of anything about this enormous world they've entered, I want them to understand one thing:

Humans are safe.

Raising Dachshunds for What They Truly Are

I also believe Dachshunds are profoundly misunderstood.

They are frequently described as stubborn, difficult to train or determined to do whatever they please. And yes — anyone who has loved a Dachshund knows they have opinions. Lots of them. 😂

But this breed was created to think independently. They were bred to hunt, make decisions and continue working without constantly looking to a person for direction.

That independence isn't a flaw.

It's part of what makes a Dachshund a Dachshund.

Our goal isn't to breed that character out of them. It is to raise confident dogs who trust their people, enjoy working with them and retain the intelligence, courage, personality and unmistakable spirit that has made this breed extraordinary for generations.

Always Learning. Always Improving.

Responsible breeding isn't something I believe anyone simply finishes learning.

Mainely has evolved tremendously since 2017, and it will continue to evolve.

I want every generation we produce to reflect what we have learned from the generations before it. I want to continue strengthening our health testing, studying our pedigrees, evaluating our dogs honestly and choosing pairings for a reason — not simply because two beautiful Dachshunds can produce beautiful puppies.

Perfection isn't the promise.

Intentional improvement is.

And Then Comes the Magic

Eventually, every puppy I've spent weeks protecting, raising, worrying over, laughing at and falling hopelessly in love with is placed into someone else's arms.

You would think that would be the hardest part.

Sometimes it is.

But it has also become one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Because I know what these dogs can become to someone.

I've lived it myself.

I've watched Mainely puppies become someone's best friend, someone's constant companion, a new beginning after losing a beloved old Dachshund, or another member of a family that simply cannot imagine life without this remarkable breed.

After all these years, I don't just believe Dachshunds are magic.

I know they are.

I've seen it. I've lived it. And I've been lucky enough to help make a little of that magic myself.

That's why I've always called them my Magic Makers.

And giving another family the chance to discover that same magic is why I keep doing this.

Mainly Mini. Mainly Long Haired. All Magic. 🪄
